Erosion Of The Self
Full-length album, 12" LP / CD
Runtuh's sophomore album, Erosion of the Self, released in 2022, marks a significant evolution in the Malaysian doom/sludge trio's musical journey. Departing from the emotional and depressive tones of their debut, Dissolution (2021), this album delves into a more nihilistic and primal soundscape, reflecting themes of societal decay and personal disintegration. Thematically, the album explores the erosion of humanity and freedom under autocratic oppression, offering a bleak yet poignant commentary on modern societal structures.
Following some major changes after their debut album, the band has come back renewed as a trio lineup with new members, Wak (24 Reasons, FTTD) & Hafiz (Body Rag, Bohr) on frontline guitar duties and original member Trishay (Ksyatriya) taking over drumming & vocal duties.
Their latest album reflects a significant departure from the emotional and depressive style characterized in their debut album 'Dissolution' (2021) and instead, finds them delving deeper into a harsher, grittier, noisier and more nihilistic sphere of sound, form and thematic context.
This is directly aligned with the band's intention of addressing topics of social disorder and hypocrisy, bigotry, political corruption and modern slavery. The band humbly offers up crushing tracks that navigate the loss of one's humanity and freedom at the hands of autocratic oppression and control.
Recorded and produced between February and March 2022 at iSeekMusic Studio, the album was mixed and mastered by Mokhtar Rizal. The artwork, created by Kecik Pusak (for CD and cassette tape format) and Ibayarifins (for vinyl LP format), complements the album's dark and introspective themes. Initially self-released digitally and in CD format on April 5, 2022, Erosion of the Self saw a limited cassette release of 200 copies by Basement Records on June 6, 2022, and a 12" vinyl LP release on April 20, 2024, via Vanilla Thunder Records.
Runtuh is an extreme doom/sludge metal band based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Trishay (drummer) formed Runtuh in 2021, the band has quickly established itself within the Southeast Asian underground metal scene through its raw, oppressive sound and socially conscious themes.
Runtuh's music is characterized by crushing riffs, slow tempos, and a gritty, unpolished production that captures the essence of live performance. Their sound draws inspiration from doom, sludge, and post-metal genres, creating an atmosphere of bleakness and intensity. Lyrically, the band delves into topics such as oppression, social disorder, political corruption, and nihilism, reflecting a deep engagement with contemporary societal issues.
